  • First comprehensive reconstruction of the main airport runway in more than 60 years completed
  • Inserted runway remains active as taxiway and alternative runway for additional operational flexibility
  • Belgrade Airport continues its modernization to increase capacity and service quality

Belgrade Airport, part of VINCI Airports, last night put into operation its reconstructed main runway at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport according to the latest standards, ensuring handling all aircraft types, equipped also with a landing system in low visibility conditions.

After more than six decades, the main runway has gained a new dimension in terms of technical capability, operational reliability and safety, and in this way will contribute to increasing the airport's operational capacity, as the plan for the inserted runway is to remain in operational use as a parallel taxiway or alternative runway for the needs of emergency or planned closure of the main runway.

"With the main runway reconstruction completed, Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport enters a new phase of its development, enabling greater efficiency and even better service quality. This is one of the milestones to our goal of making Belgrade a hub of Southeast Europe and enabling handling of 15 million passengers per year by the end of the concession period," said Chivoine Rem, Belgrade Airport CEO.

The reconstruction works of the main runway, 3,400 meters long, are part of a wider modernization project of Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, which in the next phase includes the construction of four Rapid Exit Taxiways, which will create conditions for further improvement of operational capacities, primarily in terms of the possible air traffic movements per hour.

The new, inserted runway, opened in June 2023, played a key role during the works on the main runway, enabling uninterrupted traffic and ensuring full continuity of service to passengers and operating carriers at Belgrade Airport.

VINCI Airports continues to invest in the development and modernization of Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, with a special emphasis on sustainability and improving the passenger experience. The reconstructed main runway symbolizes the blend of tradition and innovation, while at the same time confirming the company's commitment to continuous modernization, capacity expansion and service improvement, thus laying a solid foundation for the future growth of air traffic in Serbia and the region.
