Automatic passport reading
The automatic passport reading system significantly improves the efficiency and security of border crossings, as well as the comfort and travel experience of passengers. Key advantages of this system are faster passport control procedure for passengers, which reduces queues and waiting and more accurate passenger identification.
The automatic passport reading service can initially be used by citizens of the Republic of Serbia over 18 years of age, who hold a valid passport of the Republic of Serbia, while the use of this system will gradually be enabled for passengers from other countries.
Using the system is very simple, and the average passage time takes less than 12 seconds.
More information can be found below.
This system brings a number of advantages that significantly improve the efficiency and security of border crossings, as well as the comfort and travel experience of passengers. Some of the key advantages include:
- Faster passport control procedure for passengers, which reduces queues and waiting times at border crossings, as the identification and verification process takes a few seconds;
- The system uses advanced biometric technologies, such as facial scanning, which enable more accurate identification of passengers and reduce the risk of fraud and misuse of documents.
The automated passport reading service can be used by citizens of the Republic of Serbia over the age of 18, holding a valid passport of the Republic of Serbia. Persons of the same age from other countries, who, based on the visa policy of the Republic of Serbia, do not require a visa to enter the Republic of Serbia, will be allowed to use this system in the coming period, whereof the passengers will be informed in a timely manner.
The automatic passport reading system can only be used by adults due to the speed and reliability of the system.
Unfortunately, ID cannot be read. The automated passport reader can only be used by passengers who use a passport as a travel document for crossing the state border.
The system is very user-friendly. The user independently starts the process of performing border control by placing the passport on the document reader. The screen placed above the document reader then displays all the information and instructions on how to place the document correctly. After the document reader successfully checks the data, the user is shown a green arrow on the information screen and the entrance door opens, as the arrow directs the user to enter the closed area of the ABC gate. After opening the entrance door, the user enters the photography area, which is surrounded by glass side walls, which limit the user's movement and prevent the user from leaving the ABC gate area before the biometric facial check is performed. In order to perform the biometric check, the user must stand at a marked place in this area to take a facial photo. After the check is completed and if there are no obstacles for the passenger to cross the border, the exit door opens, and the user can leave the closed area of the ABC gate.
Instructions for using these devices can be found on the device itself.
The average control time including scanning the travel document on the document reader, as the first step, and opening the exit door, as the last step, during which the border control of the person and document is performed, takes less than 12 seconds.
Yes, it is necessary to remove all additional items, except for glasses.
According to the Law on Border Control of the Republic of Serbia, the act of crossing the state border is verified in the travel document by stamping. Accordingly, after using this system, citizens of the Republic of Serbia will have their state border crossing verified in their passport by a police officer at the exit, while at the entrance to the Republic of Serbia, an entry stamp is stamped upon personal request.
In case the system cannot read the passport, the passenger is directed to the border control booth to have the document checked by a police officer.
In addition to the traditional way of performing border controls by a police officer, automated passport reading will be used as an additional option, as the persons wishing to cross the border will have the right to choose whether to use the automated passport reading system for performing border control or have the border control performed by a border police officer.
Using automated passport reading, a border control check is carried out in accordance with the principle of data minimization, meaning that only the personal data necessary for serving the purpose of border control are processed. The Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Serbia uses this system to process personal data to perform border control checks of persons and documents, under the Law on Border Control of the Republic of Serbia.
